Last Full Day

Homepage

It's the last full day...
Today, we learned about a mathematician who isn't dead yet! Her name is Maryam Mirzakhani, and she was born in Tehran, Iran in May, 1977. She earned her PhD at Harvard University in 2004, then became a professor at Princeton, then switched to Stanford, and finally, she won the Fields Medal in 2014. We also learned about cryptography, more about Pascal's Triangle, and more polynomiography... Farewell, Girls+Math Camp... (>~<)

Third Day...

Homepage

Today is the third day...
Today we learned about Maria Agnesi, a child prodigy, pentominos, visited a trivia website called Sporcle, learned the Fibonacci sequence, played Mastermind, and learned the Golden Ratio (approx. 1.618). Also, more polynomiographs! Look! Down here, peoples! Poly-power!

And that's all, folks! Y'know, 'cause
the pic looks like the end scene in the
                                                                                                     old Looney Tunes shows?

Second Day of Camp...Plus More Math!

Homepage
Another day, another loud awakening...oh well. The day started with Cabin 2 being late to wake up, and I REALLY need my sleep or I'm as inanimate as a sack of sand, no, a SNAIL...covered in molasses...on a cold...January morning. Ugh. Anyway, today we learned about (SQUEE! Here comes the good part) Ada Lovelace, one of the greatest female mathematicians and the first programmer OF ALL TIME!! Boom! She was very creative when she was a kid, but she never met her father, Lord Byron (he was a poet), and was home-schooled at age 8. She designed a flying machine when she was 13, though she had many illnesses as a child. She died due to bloodletting that really didn't need to be done, and of cancer. Also, we learned about the Fundamental Counting Principle (When there are m ways of doing something, and n ways to do another, there are n ways to do both.), polygons and polyhedra, microbiology, and how good that delicious pizza from lunch tasted. J.K.! But that pizza was yumtastic... Anyway, I was soooooo tired today. :P I was all like..."Uuuuuuuulgh..." Here's a polynomiograph or two...

On the First Day of Girls Plus Math, My Teachers Taught To Me...

Homepage
First day, new start. Today we learned about a female mathematician named Hypatia, who was born in Egypt in late 300's AD, and ended up a well-regarded woman for her time. She was killed for "being a witch" about 115 years later. We also learned about Venn Diagrams, sets, or groups of objects, the game Set, polynomials, and my personal fave, polynomiography. Polynomiography uses polynomials to create really cool art, and also uses coding to create images. Here's one of the pictures I made... Looks like a jellyfish, right?
